Something You Used To Eat But Can’t or Won’t Any Longer: This module is all about helping you think about your personal connections to food. Giving up a preferred or favorite food (or entire food groups), for whatever reason, can be very hard–whether for personal, health, ethical, religious, or other reasons. What is a food you can’t or won’t eat anymore? Why? Was it difficult to give up? What did you learn about the food or yourself in the process of letting it go? Foods You Ate When Times Were Tough: One of the purposes of this unit is to encourage you to think about how food is connected to larger social issues, including economic ones. The COVID-19 pandemic brought to our attention the instability of food chains and supplies. The pandemic is just one glaring example of how, inevitably, life circumstances surprise us and change our patterns of eating in unexpected ways. Is there a particular food you can remember eating when times were tough? Think broadly about “tough” here. Was your preferred food in short supply or too expensive? Were you sick? Were you stuck at home with no transportation to get what you wanted/needed? What was your experience during that time and what did it teach you about the role of food in your personal, family, social, or community life?Favorite Holiday/Celebration Foods: For many of us, our favorite memories about holidays or important celebrations involve food. This is a testament to how powerful food can be for making meaning and lasting memories in our lives. What is your favorite holiday food? Where did it come from? What do you know about it? What recipe are you going to feature in your blog post?: To begin drafting your project, you will need to select the recipe you want to write about. This unit’s readings, videos, and writing exercises have hopefully encouraged you to consider food or a recipe that is meaningful to you in some way. Discuss what recipe you want to attempt and why. Why is this recipe personally important to you? What is the story behind it? Do you anticipate any challenges reproducing and writing this recipe?How might the recipe be culturally/socially/historically significant? In your Preface, you’ll need to show your readers that the recipe (or its ingredients) are not just personally significant: they matter within a larger cultural/social/historical context.
