Social Status: Daniel is a War Veteran from the Persian Gulf War from the early 90s. In 1991, he returned back to his homeland San Francisco. The problem is that Daniel returns with uncontrollable panic attacks and is diagnosed with PTSD. He started losing control two weeks after returning, and in only two weeks, he decided to wander into the streets. Daniel was still a very young man; he was only 24 years of age, yet he had difficulty socializing with other young people his age and always lived in constant fear of others. His parents (and other family members) tried to get him medical help, but he was resistant to any and all interventions. He always got violent when others wanted to talk to him about his PTSD. Within two to three weeks, he ended up homeless on the streets of San Francisco. He would dormid his symptoms by drinking alcohol and other drugs (Cocaine, Marijuana, etc.). He became a druggy sleeping on the street and not wanting or accepting any help from family members or friends. All he wanted was money to buy alcohol and other street drugs. In 1998, the family lost touch with Daniel and started a statewide search. He was found in Escondido, California, part of San Diego Country, in a miserable skeletal condition with almost no hair and a pale yellowish skin color. He developed liver cirrhosis and was in and out of consciousness, hallucinating and reliving flashbacks of war events he sustained eight years before. His family turned their back on him, seeing how sick (but defiant) he was. They didnt insist and just let him stay in the streets. He doesn’t attend any medical interventions, and every so often, the ambulance picks him up on the street when he loses consciousness. Quite frankly, no one cares about him. He cannot work (that is, walk on the streets in search of recycling cans for money), and so he begs on the street for money. He is seen on alleys by himself with raged sweat pants, old shoes, and no shirt or other clothing to cover to protect himself from the cold weather In Escondido. At this very time, when no one “gives a dime” for Daniel, it is when a dog follows him around in quite unconditionally. It is amazing and admirable to this four-legged creature how he cares for poor Daniel every day. When asking the local police about Daniel, the local police officer recites the following poem with tears in his eyes:
“He is seen as a beggar in every corner of the city,
…and everyone has forgotten how this young man gave his life for his country,
No one helps this poor young man but spit at his face countless times,
… and only a ghostly presence of the man once he was remains,
Yet a dog is always his faithful companion and gives him some warm on his lonely nights,
But no one cares, no one gives a dime, no one gives a dime,
Oh, poor Daniel, no one gives a dime, no one gives a dime, except that ugly dog.
It seems his only real and faithful companion is an old “ugly” dog. Please tell me why the dog accompanies him during the day but also at night, giving him (Daniel) some comfort. I know you can’t get inside the mind of a dog, but why do you suspect this loving and caring creature would stay with Daniel when Daniel has absolutely nothing to give the dog, especially considering his debilitating medical condition? Why do dogs stay around when other “humans” leave?
