Then quote the moment. Make sure to cite in-text (Samuel page#). And answer the following: Why is this moment important to our rhetorical understanding of the text? What is Samuel trying to convey to the reader by using this appeal? In paragraph three, explain how this use of rhetoric enables Samuel to support the text’s appeal to a specific audience. You may use another example of his use of this appeal in the essay and unpack how these further appeal to the audience you think he is writing to.   Strategies * Read the essay carefully, identifying Samuel’s main claim and the key ideas that support that claim. Once you have a clear sense of Samuel’s argument, paraphrase it by substituting your own words for the original. * Use transitions, attributive tags, and strong verbs (e.g. “Samuel’s claims”; “Samuel’s argues”), * Be accurate, objective, and complete. * Review Wilhoit, “Summary,” particularly his discussion of informative summaries, * Review “Paraphrase X3” in Writing Analytically. * In your second paragraph on analysis, use WA’s sections on “The Method” and “Uncovering Assumptions” to help you focus on the details in the text instead of your reaction to it. * In the final paragraph, reflect on why the important detail you focused on shows something important about the author’s goals in creating this text for an intended audience.   Criteria for Evaluation 1.
